Sit down and get ready for another wild episode of Magic Moments with Shannon.

In the beginning of August, after much contemplation, Josh and I had started the carnivore diet.

Carnivore is a diet where you only eat meat and animal-based foods — meat, eggs, and sometimes dairy — and cut out all plants and carbs. This helps your body switch to using fat for fuel instead of sugar.

Which I know sounds bonkers, but let me tell you why we decided to try this route.

The reason we are trying it is because removing plant foods can calm inflammation, which may help me with my autoimmune and connective-tissue disease.

Cutting out plant foods may help me because many plants contain natural defense chemicals our bodies have to fight off — things like oxalates, lectins, and phytates. For most people, this isn’t a big deal. But for autoimmune or connective‑tissue‑sensitive bodies, these compounds can irritate the gut, trigger immune reactions, and keep inflammation turned on. When you remove them, the immune system finally gets a break, digestion calms down, and the body stops reacting to every meal.

A calmer gut = a calmer immune system = less inflammation in joints, tissues, and the nervous system.

We will be writing a blog and recording some videos to tell more details about the whole experience.

This is a MAJOR change in your system. Your body has to completely reset to using fat as an energy source instead of carbs. During this adjustment, you feel like absolute shit. It’s simply called the keto flu — it’s the cluster of symptoms people get when they suddenly stop eating carbs and their body switches to using fat instead of glucose for fuel.

It’s basically your system saying, “Whoa, we’re changing energy sources,” and during that shift you can feel tired, achy, nauseous, foggy, or flu‑ish.

I have done multiple nutritional programs throughout the years, and Keto was one of them, so I know all about the keto flu. I have experienced it first hand, and was ready…

And so it began… and it kicked my ass.

Something I have never done before was completely detox myself off plant products. It’s a WHOLE OTHER THING in itself and I was NOT prepared for it (check out the blog for more details on that fiasco).

But when you detox from plant products, your body goes through oxalate dumping as well.

This combo sent my nervous system and autoimmune disease in the holy grail of flair ups.

I knew my connective tissue and joint problems were going to get worse before they got better. What I didn’t expect was the intensity and the fucking duration of this detox.

I was in some serious contemplation of what the fuck I was doing. I was so sick around the clock. Is this the right route? What am I thinking?

Day by day would pass, I was starting to notice changes but was still overwhelmed by feeling like I got hit by a truck. Finally, around 3 weeks in, I turned to the universe and asked for a sign. You know me, I love me some universal signs, and she ALWAYS delivers.

“Spirit. Is this the right route? If I push through this, will it be worth it? I need a clear sign if this is the way. No bullshitting around, clear and straight to the point.”

The following day…
